I am a plastic surgeon for my profession, but my hobby is astronomy and within that hobby, I have a passion for total solar eclipses. I've been to three of them overseas. After the 2001 eclipse, I developed the first dedicated solar eclipse timer, to help me with the 2002 eclipse. For 2017 I have released Solar Eclipse Timer as an app for mobile devices. The app is suitable for first-time eclipse observers as well as veteran eclipse chasers.

My goal is to help everyone enjoy the August 21, 2017, Total Solar Eclipse. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people and Solar Eclipse Timer is an inexpensive tool to ensure that you do not miss a second of this wonderful event and that you observe it safely!

Once you are in the path of totality, GPS location functions automatically find your location. It calculates your contact times and loads the 4 eclipse contact times into the timers, converting them to your local time. It then "talks" you through the eclipse! Voice announcements tell you what interesting things to observe for during the partial phases and then voice countdowns guide you to the precisely contact times. It announces when it is safe to take your solar glasses off (C2) and when you must put them back on (just before C3).

To practice your plan for photography, the app has a demo session that plays a totality movie synchronized with the timers. The app includes a unique calculator that lists the times you use to take a sequence of partial phase images to create a beautiful sequence of the phases just like professional photographers. The app includes an extensive help file detailing the use of all of its unique features. The help file also includes eclipse day checklists and educational information about the partial phase phenomena.
